If You Use URL Shorteners?

Lately, the following occurred to me, I composed my regular weekly newsletter and posted it on my website. Since this was a more WordPress URL, like countless other webmasters, I used a URL shortening service to make this connection more usable and manageable.

I submitted this Highest paying url shortener to earn money into Twitter and put it in my weekly email posting… immediately I started getting emails from my readers and followers… the link does not work, you have to have made a mistake.

Which could be easily achieved, but when I checked the connection, I discovered that the shortening service wasn’t working properly and giving the dreaded”Page Not Found” response. To compound the issue, I had been using the Google URL shortener Goo.gl and because it was Google everyone assumed that the error was on my part. I mean Google is Google.

In years past I was using bit.ly but had changed to Goo.gl, well – since it’s Google. And everything works with Google; this was the first time something with Google hadn’t worked as intended, that I utilized. And it just was not my hyperlinks, none of the connections with Goo.gl were functioning. No huge loss, unless you’re linking your Black Friday & Cyber Monday visitors using these shorteners. Ouch.

However, this brings up the question of whether you need to use a link shortener?

A URL link shortener works by redirecting your shorter link to the longer one you’ve entered in their database. Then your search engine optimization gains must pass through to your link if this is a redirect. No harm done. Since the search engines read this connection as temporary but when the shortening service uses a 302 connection SEO isn’t passed through to a connection.

All the best URL shorteners like tinyurl, bit.ly and goo.gl utilizes 301 redirects so that they are SEO friendly, if they are working!

From this search engine optimization perspective, there’s absolutely not any reason to not use these shortening solutions, besides they’re amazing for sharing links and receiving out your links there.

I just started using those link shorteners due to Twitter which only provides you 140 characters to get your point. These shorteners are also great for distributing and sharing your links around the internet. However, in 1 way by means of a URL shortener isn’t a wise marketing move because you’re giving up control of your connection, placing it in someone else’s hands, in this case Google’s.

If it goes down, or they choose not to link to your articles for some reason, you are in trouble. Same is true for bit.ly, they’re in charge of your links. Maybe it does not count so much if it’s a general connection, but if you a have an affiliate link in there, you can not change or alter it
